About Kyrian Nwagwu
A lifestyle of service
Councilman Kyrian Nwagwu was elected to the Lathrup Village Council Michigan in 2003 and re-elected in 2006 and 2009 for his current term.
> >>>Being the first African-born elected official in the State of Michigan has made him a glaring source of pride and inspiration to members of the community, especially young people, who see his election and re-elections as clear evidence of the truism of immense possibilities and opportunities in the United States of America.
Councilman Nwagwu came to the US from his native Nigeria in 1982 to study at the Eastern Michigan University where he earned his first degree. He later earned his graduate degree from another American university.
A real estate investor and president of BTF Village Group, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm appointed and reappointed him to represent the general public in the Board of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons for a term expiring June 30, 2011.
The friendly councilman has continued to lend his voice to pertinent issues affecting all segments of the community, especially the less privileged, as his legislative positions and votes attest.
He has also spoken up on issues of social justice and peace on the international arena. For instance, when President Barack Obama delayed in appointing a special representative to the genocide-stricken region of Darfur in the Sudan, Councilman Nwagwu did not keep silent. He sent a letter to President Obama and got his council to pass a resolution on the issue. Days later, President Obama appointed a special representative to the region. A member of the Lions Club, Councilman Nwagwu has won several awards recognizing his remarkable service to the community. He has been cited or featured in reputable books and newspapers, and has been called upon at different times to keynote important public events. As he posits, "It is always a joy to give back to the community, a delight to work diligently to improve the well being of our community. That’s why service is my lifestyle."
Councilman Nwagwu is happily married with children.
